Craftsman Bungalow Design Features... at their best

It's like a Dickens Novel.... "it was the best of times... and it was the worst of times".... "it is simple and it is complex"... at the same time.  Built in a time when craftsmanship meant something!  Square tapered columns to support the Incised roof of the porch... note the detail on the fascia... note the staggered block on the porch fascia... look at the window... seven on one... with flanking double hung sash windows for ventilation.  There was no nail gun used to build this.  We've mentioned the door many times... but this is really a great design thought... it is simply elegant.. and allows incredible ventilation.  You can buy a new Z6 Corvette... a tract home on the golf course in Encinitas Ranch... the new Hummer H2... they are all fun.  But... they are not this much fun.

Not all design follows functionIconic front facing gable on Incised Porch Roof line

Now... this treatment of the end of the fascia board.  I have spent three days on the internet trying to find out what this was for.  I give up!.. anyone out there know... let me know.  The consensus so far... simply decoration... but correct for the period.  The gable... classic true to the style and period.  Ventilating panels into the gable... false supports for style. Note the staggered blocking on the porch fascia just below the ridge line support.

Just walk around this home... and look at the windows... it is a treat !Go down to Home Depot... ask them for some Gum Wood

Exterior of the dining room "Art Glass Window"... art... hiding a pair of three over one sashes... and a seven over one stopped glass.  Frank Lloyd Wright at his finest.  Note the Door Jamb... cut into the corner... and the beautiful... soft and warm Crown moldings.

Left Flank... Built-in... secretaryRight Flank Built-in.... book case

Balance and symmetry... Gum Wood secretary desk on one side of the tiled fireplace... and Gum Wood Bookcase on the other.  notice the double hung sash windows with Gum Wood Trim.  This is how it was done!  Fireplace is not currently functional.

New Wall... correct period window and built-insGum Wood Paneling... hardwood floors... and I love that entry !

New and old.  First photo on left... the rear of the second bedroom where the wall has been moved out.  Correct four over one... with side sashes... and built-ins correct to the period.  Then the old... the dining room... looking to the entrance in the living room.  Note the Gum Wood Paneling... not the ventilating panel to the right of the entry door... stacked open for that cool Ocean Breeze.  Notice too... the lighting... the crown molding... the floors... and the apparent love given to this project.
